On October 13, 2026, custody bank BNY announced that it completed the first overnight tri-party repo transaction using digitized assets alongside market maker Citadel Securities on Wall Street’s large-scale repo platform. Instead of stopping at isolated trial issuances, this transaction directly connects trade execution, instant settlement, and secured financing in a single continuous workflow.
Specifically, Citadel Securities purchased a two-year U.S. Treasury bond through BNY on the Tradeweb trading platform. Immediately after trade execution, a tokenized representation of the bond position was created on BNY’s private digital ledger and settled within minutes. This speed significantly shortens the standard T+1 settlement cycle currently applied in traditional government bond markets.
Bringing tokenized assets into short-term funding markets
After the settlement process on the digital ledger was completed, Citadel Securities immediately pledged this tokenized bond position as collateral in an overnight tri-party repo agreement with BNY to obtain cash liquidity. Accepting digitized assets as collateral in repo transactions enables rapid capital circulation for institutional trading desks without having to wait for the next day’s operating session.
BNY is currently the world’s leading asset servicing institution with over $62,600 billion in assets under custody and administration. A BNY representative emphasized that as trading activities in public debt markets tend toward more continuous operation, infrastructure supporting liquidity and collateral management must upgrade to keep pace with the velocity of asset movement among major financial institutions.
Limits of a closed network and the expansion roadmap
Despite being procedurally groundbreaking, this transaction currently remains entirely within a closed internal system operated by BNY. The official release did not disclose the nominal value of the bond position, smart contract addresses, or links to any public blockchain network. In addition, the cash settlement leg of the repo transaction still relies on BNY’s traditional funds, while digital cash solutions and tokenized deposits remain in future development plans.
To advance toward the goal of a continuously operating 24/7 market, BNY expects to expand the operating hours of traditional settlement platforms into European and Asian trading sessions in 2027. The test with Citadel Securities proves the technical feasibility of digitizing public debt assets, but the core question regarding data interoperability among rival custody banks will remain the largest hurdle before this model can expand to a market-wide scale.
