On September 8, 2026, European AI company Mistral announced a €3 billion Series D funding round at a valuation of over €21 billion. This is the company’s largest equity funding round 3 years after its founding and also the largest amount of capital ever raised by a European tech company.
The funding round was co-led by Samsung Electronics along with Scaleup Europe Fund (managed by EQT) and existing investor PSG Equity. The roster of other investors shows that this round has a more strategic character than purely financial. New investors include Advent, funds and accounts managed by BlackRock, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
Many previous investors also returned for this funding round, including: a16z, ASML, Bpifrance, DST Global, Eurazeo, General Catalyst, Index Ventures, Lightspeed, NVIDIA, Salesforce Ventures, and several others.
Notably, the previous Series C was led by ASML, while this Series D is led by Samsung, meaning the firm’s two largest rounds are both backed by hardware manufacturing giants.
The proceeds will be used to expand frontier model research, increase training compute capacity, scale infrastructure, and accelerate international commercial growth. Mistral is currently present in 20 countries, serving more than 125 enterprises in mission-critical AI projects, including Airbus, ASML, and HSBC.

In terms of positioning, Mistral considers itself the only company in the world building a complete stack to address a question these organizations still leave open: How to use AI for mission-critical needs without surrendering control to a third party. That stack comprises open-weight models, infrastructure and compute to run them, and a product layer to operationalize the models. The firm’s concept of “sovereign AI” is divided into four tiers: data remains within the organization’s borders, models are controllable and customizable, compute is private with predictable costs, and operational systems are auditable.
That Mistral’s largest funding rounds have both been led by hardware makers is not merely routine financial news; it reflects a strategic calculation by Mistral and Europe to maintain at least one AI alternative independent of US and Chinese AI labs, catering to governments and enterprises unable or unwilling to hand over their data to a foreign company.
